Flax is used to create Bowstrings. To do this, simply use the flax on a Spinning wheel, for example in Barbarian village or Seers' village. Creating a bowstring will grant 20 Crafting experience. Normally the Crafting skill is only available to players with an active membership but creating bowstrings is an exception to this.
The most common place to pick flax is the flax field in Seers' village, just south of Camelot. There is also a flax field south-west of Rellekka.
