Butterfly jars are required for catching butterflies while hunting. Buy it at the Hunting expert just west of the Grand Exchange for 15 coins. You will always need to have an empty jar in your inventory to be able to catch a butterfly.
When you have caught Butterflies in a jar, you can release them to buff other players within multi-combat areas.
