Runecrafting

With the Runecrafting skill players can create runes used for casting Magic spells. All runes are made out of Rune essence, mined from the Rune essence mine. Players can access this mine by climbing down the ladder south of Barbarian village or by talking to Aubury in Varrock, Port Sarim or Ardougne.

Runes can be crafted at runecrafting altars, which are accessible in three ways:

- Enter a Prismatic altar while having one of the Talismans in the inventory. By default, players are teleported to the runecrafting altar of the first talisman in their inventory. However, players can also use a talisman on a Prismatic altar to bypass the default selection.

- Enter a Prismatic altar while having a Talisman staff equipped. The concept is the same as for talismans, but the talisman staff saves one inventory spot.

- Enter one of the rifts in the inner ring of the Abyss.

Crafting runes at a runecrafting altar will turn the rune essence in your inventory into runes. All runes can be crafted at a runecrafting altar, except for Astral runes. These runes can only be created by smelting 4 Rune essence in a furnace or by using the Superheat spell whilst wearing an Astral tiara. The tiara can be bought from Aubury's Rune Emporium for 39,648 coins. You need 60 Smithing and 60 Runecrafting to create astral runes.

Runes

In the table below all requirements and runecrafting experience for crafting runes are displayed. Also, the amount of runes that you get for 1 Rune essence on level 99 Runecrafting is displayed. The multiplication does not apply to the amount of experience you get from crafting one Rune essence into a certain type of rune, that always stays the same.

Combination runes

Combination runes are combined versions of elemental runes (Air, Water, Earth or Fire runes). Combination runes require level 1 Runecrafting. In order to craft combination runes of element A and B, players must bring rune essence, runes of element A and the talisman of element A to the altar of element B or vice versa. For example, to make Smoke runes, which are a combination of Air and Fire, players must bring rune essence and either air runes and an air talisman to the fire altar or fire runes and a fire talisman to the air altar.

Useful Equipment

Wearing the runecrafter outfit will increase the amount of runes crafted by 2,5% per piece. Full set grants 10% increased amount of runes while also increasing experience by 10%. However, The set does not affect Astral rune crafting as you will always get 10 Astrals per 4 rune essence. Players can further increase experience gains by 5% when wearing Chaos gauntlets. The effect stacks with the runecrafter outfit effect, granting a player with full outfit and Chaos gauntlets an overall 15% experience bonus. Runecrafting pouches increase the amount of rune essence that players can carry in their inventory, allowing them to craft more runes per crafting run.
